I'm ashamed to admit this, but whenever i come across a simple word that i'm not sure about, (stop laughing!) i revert to the old fashioned rhyme thingys that were drilled into me 15 years ago in kiddy wink school. In this case: "i before e, except after c, or before gh". Maybe my memory's a bit off, but the word weird just doesn't fit this rule. Have i been blatently misled in my primary education? Or am i jus getn old? Ferkin wierd man!

Just remember kids:

‘i’ before ‘e’ except after ‘c’
and when sounding like ‘a’
as in neighbor and weigh
and on weekends and holidays
and all throughout May
and you’ll always be wrong
no matter what you say.”

Thats how I was taught it...

How are these difficult? I can't even imagine someone misspelling 'dungeon' as 'dunegon', to be honest. And encyclopedia/encyclopaedia are both allowed as far as I know, though the former is more common in use; colour/color simply depends on the fact whether you're (resp.) British or American.

*sigh*
Like I pointed out, some of them aren't really wrong, while the dungeon one is just plain ridiculous. It's possible people accidently write 'dunegon' because they're typing like crazy, but I can't imagine anyone to write it like that systematically. If you're trying to expand on the original idea, you might want to take words that actually do cause difficulties or even have a wrong variant.
