Gidday,

I have a poisoned character (early in the game), will the poison eventually go away or do I need to use a potion or the church for a cure (don't have cure posion spell yet)

It does not go away...IIRC, and if it does it takes a lonnng time.

Yep, you always need at least one cure poison which can be purchased at the Wizard's shop on you at all times. Especially when you head out to the Serpent Temple.

And of course there are potions to make the poison disappear. I can´t remember the color though (green or yellow perhaps?)

not only potions or the temple can cure the poison. Since u r quite early in the game so this may take some time----- level up your priest (an elf hopefully coz they gain more xp) so that he or she can specialise in vine magic. there is a spell in the vine school of magic that cures poison n it's VERY handy.....
btw, the cure poison potion is yellow in colour........
