Default A capital question for the Dutch

One for Johnny I guess but others may know ..

What is the Capital of the Kingdom of the Netherlands? When I lived there I was always under the impression it was The Hague or Den Haag. I know for sure that the government and the foriegn embassies and the queen lives in Den Haag but most (though not all) web sites say Amsterdam.

The Hague is just the seat of parliament.

None as such, I sort of read the sports pages to get results. OK so Amsterdam is 'the capital' How does that work when all the government and parlient is in Den Haag? Is there any moves to change it or do you guys just like being different to everyone else

I think we can safely say it's the latter. To make matters more confusing, while Amsterdam is located in the province of Noord-Holland, the capital of Noord-Holland is in fact Haarlem.

To be honest, i don't think anyone really gives a crap, both Amsterdam and Den Haag suck anyway (footballwise that is).

I think Den Haag is commonly referred to as the 'administrative capital'. I wasn't really aware of the details, so I looked it up on wikipedia. Wiki wrote the following:

Den Haag is de hoofdstad van de Nederlandse provincie Zuid-Holland. Het is ook de vestigingsplaats van regering, parlement en Hoge Raad en de woonplaats van de koningin. Daarmee is het de de facto hoofdstad van Nederland en wordt het in buitenlandse gidsen en boeken soms als zodanig bestempeld. In Nederland wordt echter het onderscheid tussen Amsterdam en Den Haag beschreven als hoofdstad vs. residentiestad.

Ondanks het ontbreken van een wettelijke status (althans tussen 1815 en 1983) heeft men Amsterdam altijd vrij algemeen als hoofdstad aanvaard. De reden daarvan ligt ongetwijfeld voor een deel in de functie als koningsstad: behalve de stad waar de inhuldiging van de koning plaatsheeft, is Amsterdam ook vaak de locatie voor koninklijke huwelijken en voor de jaarlijkse koninklijke nieuwjaarsreceptie. Maar waarschijnlijk ook in de relatief belangrijke rol die de stad in de Nederlandse geschiedenis heeft gespeeld. Vanaf het eind van de 16e eeuw groeide Amsterdam uit tot de grootste stad van Nederland en het belangrijkste centrum van handel, economie, cultuur en financiën; een positie die de stad tot op de dag van vandaag heeft weten te behouden.

Een andere reden wordt wellicht gevonden in de ontkenning van Den Haag als hoofdstad: hoewel regeringszetel vanaf de 16e eeuw wenste men Den Haag niet als hoofdstad te zien, omdat de Republiek der Verenigde Nederlanden formeel een statenbond was, waarvan de afzonderlijke leden zelfstandig waren met een eigen bestuur en een eigen hoofdstad. Ook na de vorming van de eenheidsstaat is deze ontkenning blijven bestaan.
