Well, I can't contribute to the poll as it's a U.S. only thing, but when i vote, I try to see who will be the representative of my views in parliament and who'll do the best job for my area. I like to then follow them up the line to see where they're coming from party/policy-wise.

It can be a tough choice. As a home owner and small business owner, one party or candidate may be the best choice, while as a musician and socially resposible person, another might be the better option.

I cannot see any rational reason for voting a particular way because "I always have" or, "my family is democrat/republican/communist".
I also think the lines are so blurry that it's not nearly a 180 degree shift to vote for opposed two-party preffered parties in consecutive elections. At least here it's not.

EDIT: George Clinton for Paliament!

I apologize for this blatantly American poll. If I was not so ignorant of political parties in other nations, it might have been a better poll.

Funny how there are no "Real" Democrats responding yet.

It's ok. Australia has Labour (traditionally left) and Liberal/National Coallition (trad. right and currently in power)

However these two are pretty much conservative right for the most part. The other parties that do anything are mainly the Australian Democrats and The Greens.

As an example of blurred lines, I heard a great quote about my state's Premier recently (Labour - meant to be working class/left wing) that he regularly out flanks the right in order to be seperate. This is so true of this country at the moment.
(sorry I can't provide a link, it was on radio and I can't remember who said it)

EDIT: Independants make a big difference here too - particularly in the senate where they often hold/share the balance of power.

I'm independent. Like Dragonmage I was raised republican, and I voted for Reagan the only time I voted. I'll be registering next time, if only to hear my little voice heard. I refuse to lock myself into any one party, which is a large part of why I havent voted. But times are-a-changin........

I chose Independent. I have been a campaign worker for democrats and republicans. The 2 times I served as a delegate It was with the democratic party each time. Just because I love Magik so much I'll admit that I have voted for Libertarian candidates on more than one occasion. For me it comes down to personal integrity and issues. When the mud slinging

Miss DragonMage Ma'am you get the silver star, That's the best reason I've heard in a long time to pick who or whom to vote for
