You'd be surprised what little things can do. I notice that more often than not, someone holds a door open for me at work if I have my hands full of bags, files and what have you. More often than I'd expect, someone says "thank you" if I hold a door for them. If common courtesy hasn't completely died out on a university campus then I've got to acknowledge a bit of hope is still lurking around the place.

At the beginning of this thread, Hiero was tryina take over my role of sarcasm/smartassedness master. Do not even attempt it, you amateur!

As for today's society being riddled with guilt and self-loathing, tis true, I feel it a lot too. But that's cos I'm a lazy git, who doesn't do enough work, or maybe I just feel like that cos I set my targets higher than my concentration/patience level? I agree that it is bad to always feel self-loathing as you put it, but it does make you strive to be better, which is always good. If we were all content with ourselves (there's no reason we should be, since we all make mistakes and do stupid things and things that hurt others) then the world would never improve, just get worse.

As for Endora's box, never heard of it, guess someone made it up and it hung around ... :S

As for what gives me hope? Not much these days, but I'm past caring. Life goes on... actually I always look forward to my next badminton session, I have hope I will cain everyone at badminton one day

Every morning, my kids love to see me, and whatever we might have been frustrated or angry about last night is history. What a way to start the day...

On a more positive note...

...fresh winter snow makes my lawn as beautiful as everyone else's

...a good bowl of chili takes the edge off a cold winter day. So does a bowl of my chili.

...I've got enough firewood left for at least six or seven good fires

...when I order more, someone else will have already chopped it into appropriately sized pieces

...a smile given creates more than one in return

Oh c'mon. Cheer up Charlie! Believe it or not, the world has never revolved around people, it tends to sidestep around them whilst avoiding eye contact more than anything.

The obvious thing to be happy about is love. it stil exhists, and people still philosiphise (dont bug me cause i spelled it wrong or if its not a word) about it. this means that its out there, alive and shining unto the people. it means the world has something to look up to.

Well, I don't really need something to remind me there is hope for humanity, because of course there is. Humanity isn't going to hell in a handbasket; there's always been very bad people and very bad things happen, it's not new and it's not a sign that humanity is at the point of no return. It's the same as it always was and always will be, we just hear about it more now with the media and techological advances allowing unprecedented access and coverage of said very bad things.

Having said that, I agree with those people who mentioned random acts of kindness. It's lovely when someone holds the door for you when they go through ahead of you instead of just letting it fall back, or smiles at you or makes small talk when you're waiting in line. Or helps you pick up stuff when you've dropped it. Or says please and thank you. So those things make my day brighter

I don't want hope. Hope is killing me. My dream is to become hopeless. When you're hopeless, you don't care, and when you don't care, that
indifference makes you attractive.

Oh, so hopelessness is the key.

It's my only hope.
