My kids & I just got back from the newly released Dungeons and Dragons movie. We are all tremendously disappointed! We are all very much into D&D type RPGs. My oldest son plays pen & Paper D&D weekly. The best I can say is, it's watchable. The director butchered what could have been a truly epic ... or at least fun ... movie. It suffers from over-acting, underdevelopment of the story & characters, and horrible directing.

Now I don't want to give the impression that it's a TOTAL dog. It had a few moments when it worked, and the special effects were decent enough. But as one reviewer on another site stated, it's like they made a movie based on the description of the game on the box, rather than the game inside.

My 10 year old said, "Here's a clue Ms. Director, Play the games BEFORE you make the movie!!"

I just hope "Hollywood" doesn't decide that the world hates these movies. Of course very few people will go to see a BAD one. If only they'd done it RIGHT.

Come on you D&D experts out there.. am I totally off base? What did YOU think?

That's too bad. I was really looking forward to the movie. I'll still go see it though, just without the high hopes I had. I noticed that they are coming out with a movie of Tomb Raider. The highlights look good. I wonder if it will be up to all our expectations?

Don't know if the movie is out in Australia yet. I haven't seen a single D&D-type movie that really captured the essence of D&D so I'll hold my judgment. That dragon movie with Sean Connery as the voice, how could you take THAT dragon seriously??

Dragonheart? Heh, that was a crock. Wasn't the star that twit off Waterworld, too?

Yes it did blow, in historic proportions! Worse than Gladiator did.

Hollywood will never get it right, it's not about mages and dragons, it's mythic adventure!

They missed the boat completely.

Hopefully, Bioware will have complete control over any Baldurs' Gate movie, if that ever happens!

ps - sorry about the spoiler stuff from an earlier post!

I've yet to see the D&D movie, so I'll reserve judgement. Does anyone remember the old D&D saturday morning cartoon? I have dim childhood memories and would love to see these again as I recall them to be quite fun.( Until some paranoid bible-pusher group related it and D&D on the whole as "evil and satanic" and got it canceled)
On a lighter note the animated movie "The Hobbit" is a nice fantasy movie thats fairly true to the book. I can only hope the upcoming "Lord of the Rings" trilogy is any where close...

Actually the lord of the rings is gonna be three movies!!!! One for each book. Supposedly they are gonna be released six months apart. The release date I saw on the website for the first movie is summer 2001. God I hope they get it right!

Me. Any dragon worth its salt would sooner have blown that little idiot to pieces than parley with him. : P
