He's had a backpack, though. You see, you cannot fully understand what it's like to not have an elephant in your room. You've never had an elephant in your room so you can't embrace the negation. Whereas you can understand not having a backpack in the room with you. You've had one there before.
No, I haven't been sniffing the gluesticks in my office..... That is a snippet of conversation I heard as I walked past the office of a Philosophy instructor who was talking to a student about a paper or exam. [ 05-02-2006, 11:21 AM: Message edited by: Cloudbringer ]

You wouldn't understand it Cloudy, you've never had an elephant in your room.

Oh my...it may alter my life experience ....just knowing that!
I have heard lots of little snippets like that but this one really had me going "huh?" and wondering how much it matters in the scheme of things that I don't understand not having an elephant in the room....

The "Elephant in the room" is a reference to an obvious problem that everyone ignores...but this quote seems to remind me of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy for some reason...no idea why.

I think he was trying to tell the student that it's impossible to fully comprehend the lack of something you've never had...but then I only heard that snippet.
