As far as I remember if you multi class you have the restrictions of both classes e.g. a multi fighter/mage can't use swords. If you dual from fighter to mage then one you get your fighter abilities back you can use them so a dualed fighter/mage can use swords. For example Nalia can use swords and bows cause she is a dual thief/mage.

Nalia is a dual mage who has surpassed her original theif class.

Once you pass the original class you should be able to use the w3eapons of the first class with no restrictions. Just keep in mind that a dual class fighter / mage still has to obey the restrcitions of a mage ie. no armour unless its elven which allows mages to cast spells like its not even there.
