Sounds like a problem common with all disk players/recorders. The laser head assembly is jammed. When this happens on a lid type CD player, it's easy to fix because the head is easily accessible. Not so on tray loaders or front feed loaders. The head has to be forced back on it's track. It usually comes off track at the outside edge. This usually happens if the player is jarred sharply while the head is at the end of the track.

The symptoms of such a problem is the inability of the player to read a disk, you won't hear the laser head move, and a clicking noise as the player tries to move the head and the little plastic sprockets slip on the belt.
