has anyone tried to go solo as a mage? I have. it's worse than the nine hells, let me tell you... I started my adventure as an invoker, with poor constitution and strength. I went in a room with nothing but quarter staff and my wits. Low and behold comes a nosy little fellow with a dagger and asks,"would you be Thaddeus Karine?" and I being the Lawful Good mage I was I said, none of your freakin' beeswax bozo!!! but he insisted I was the guy he was looking for and insisted that he would kill me with the most fiercest passion of the ninth hell that he could muster, with his great sparkling, +0, swift, valiant, and powerful, regular, dagger he killed me in one might blow!!!!
Thus ends the prodigy of the great Bhaal Spawn, Thaddeus Karine the invoker whom never got out of Candlekeep.

I happened to get an awesome roll with a Half-Elven Conjurer, and I actually did OK, but I finally gave up when I couldn't kill the Flesh Golems in the cave. Their Magic Resistance blocked everything I had, and the Darts of Wounding didn't work either, due to my pathetic THAC0. Had I beaten them, I'd have had the same problem against Mustard Jellies.

i think its always best to start as a fighter then dual class into something else at about level 3 that you really want to be, cos that way you get the good hps to start with and can levelup quickly to the class you really want, im always a fighter straight so i have not yet dualclassed ever, i still dont know if its worth it or not but if it is then i think thats the thing to do

I played a solo Fighter/Mage all the way through to the end of TOTSC and had a great time. I have to admit that I chickened out of doing a pure Mage. Instead I dual classed a Fighter to a Mage at the start of the game so that I could have some HP and weapon skill to fall back on. With XPcap removed I ended the game at level 11 Illusionist.

I tried a solo human conjurer a few months ago. I got pretty far, cleared out many maps, and reached the gnoll stronghold area before finally succumbing to all the ogres, ogrillons, hobgoblin archers (and their poisoned arrows) and sirines. I reached level six, which isn't too bad, I guess.

There are four rules to succesfully soloing a mage.
1) Press that rest button really often (i.e. whenever you've used up about half your spells). 2) Get all the summoning spells you can (if you can't summon any monsters through memorisation, collect scrolls. That way you'll at least have something to fall back on in the tougher fights. 3) Defensive and area effect spells are your friends too 4) Learn precisely which spells are most useful for the adventuring life, and learn quickly. The hard part is the beginning, again, resting really helps. You'll need a little luck as you may wake surrounded by enemies and without spells, but you can be really sneaky by resting right where the map ends. If you are ambushed, that way you can run |
