To moderators concerning banning

Howdy. I'm just curious as to what 'banning' fully entails. Does it mean that one's account is frozen and one may no longer post on the forums? Or is it a more absolute block of access, ie: cannot even view the forums any longer?

I am also curious as to whether banned individuals can re-register under a new account and thus start their ban-worthy shennanigans all over again.

A ban is usually done on IP addresses and subnets, and email addresses. So basically, to start again they need a new internet connection and a fake email address. And doing that has been tried; they were caught very quickly.
Also, circumventing an IP ban can be considered misuse of the telecommunications system; so the ISP will have something to say about it

But can a banned individual still view the forums? An example of which being: Could the recently-banned -vixen read all of the posts concerning the debacle her... 'enthusiastic' personality caused?

AFAIK, a ban will prevent you from posting, getting PMs or basically doing anything active on this site. I don't think it stops you looking, but apart from that it's comprehensive. Also, really serious rulebreakers can have their activities reported to their ISPs or law enforcement authorities if necessary.

Whatever, it's not something any Moderator wants to see happen and we only recommend Ziroc bans if someone steps so far out of line that there is little or no chance of them ever making an acceptible contribution here.

Ziroc has the ability to decide how far the ban goes, to the extent of whether or not that IP subnet can view the forum. Judging by the context I first read that in, he doesn`t ban anyone that harshly, although there is one banee *cough*istaron*cough* who I think was possibly subject to that... whether or not -vixen can still view the forum is only known to Ziroc, and possibly -vixen.

There are three stages of "banning", so to speak:

1. Locking someone's account for x number of days - this is usually for repeated infringements. At the end of the suspension period the user can then post again.

2. IP banning - this will prevent the user from posting using that IP address, irrespective of which username they use. This is for serious offences - abuse of moderators/admin/other members despite repeated warnings, or posting pornography/piracy links, etc.

3. IP subnet banning - this will prevent the user from posting using the entire subnet being used (eg. 26.24.*.*). This can mean that if a user is posting from a school, the entire school network will not be able to post. This is only done for serious repeat offenders who keep coming back to cause trouble after being banned.

Anyone can view anything here - we don't make viewing a member-only privilege. That's why you see Guests showing up in the "Recent Visitors" list.
