Seems back where he came from the vast majority of houses have fenced in yards and he found it odd to see so many adjoining properties without fences as we drove through an older neighborhood near mine. (My own yard is fenced in, btw.)

So tell me, are fences more the norm or the exception in your neighborhoods. I'm curious about the rest of the US and especially interested in how prevalent they are in other countries.

Hi Cloudy.

When we moved to the Twin Cities (Midwest) from Idaho one of the first things that stuck out was the lack of fencing between neighbors. This seemed very odd to us, coming from Boise. But it also seemed very neighborly. Now, three years later we appreciate the lack of fences and would be chagrined to see them pop up in our neighborhood. IMHO, those that live in the Midwest and East have a greater sense of community within their neighborhoods. The Northwest, in my experience, lacks this and consequently erects fences.

In DK the standard means of seperation is the privet(?) hedge - requires cutting instead of painting

Hi Cloudy...
Living in the rural Northwest, about forty miles out of Seattle, the common lot size is 1 to 5 acres, and nearly everybody has a fence or hedge. One reason is the livestock that occasionally wanders about, as a misplaced goat can wreak havoc on a garden in no time at all. Another reason, to quote Walt Whitman, "Good fences make good neighbors."
And of course we're all gun-totin', flannel-wearin, truck-drivin' rednecks, and who wants that in their front yard?

Unfortunately, most everyone in Texas has fences.

In the Deep South where I originally come from, however, it's customary to have hedges or other plants in lieu of fences...a fairly clear demarcation without being totally isolating. Sometimes a line of small trees work as well at property lines. My mom's house in Louisiana is separated from the neighbor's by holly trees (only 1 neighbor, they live on the corner.)
