I think people also prefer playing different RPGs by what perspective they are in as well as how many characters are involved. I've found I prefer first-person perspective like in Might & Magic, Wizards & Warriors, Morrowind, and Wizardry 8 to the third-person perspective of Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, and Planescape: Torment. In fact, of the latter, I've only been able to stand Planescape: Torment which I adored the first time around and got bored to death with the second time. Also, I prefer games with several main characters, not just one; even though Morrowind has a ton of replayability due to the huge amount of main and subquests, the interpersonal interaction gets pretty boring sometimes.

Vampire: The Masquerade, Redemption.
It's an RPG, an adventure game, and a drama movie all rolled into one!

Based on your obscenely limited list, I'd go with Baldur's Gate series taking #1 position and Morrowind in 2nd. IMHO Everquest does not qualify as an RPG regardless of what the makers had intended. In the end it became a realm of Power Gamers not Role Players. HUGE difference.

For shear depth of material and non-linear play I had to vote for EverQuest. There is no other RPG on the market with the amount of material, areas to explore, or loot to be had then EQ.

Diablo?! Geez if we are going to consider Diablo a RPG then I nominate Deus Ex for best RPG

The is a really unfair statement. As any RPG can be power-gamed through. In the time I played EQ (up till the release of planes of power). There were always people that were RP'ing, you just had to know were to find them. The thing I have found is that many people who dis the online RPGs are upset that their persona is not the one at the center of the story, like in a single player rpg. *shrug*

I don't think any RPG is really role-playing. I mean they are all based on a small set of rules and unless you are playing PnP then there is only so many things you can do in them and only so many options as to how to do them. Even in PnP games unless you are a "serious" actor it normally turns into a get the gold/EQ and that's about it. The best rpg imo is the most origional one, one that you can get drawn into (like a good book). I liked Morrowind but it got old near the end and I hated Wizardry 8, not for it's origionality, just cuz EVERY combat in the game got harder the higher level your characters got and almost every combat was too hard. I haven't played the other games. Of all the games I've played I like the Legend of Zelda games (not really a rpg). Every time you progress in the game something gets added that changes the game (a new weapon, ability, character, town etc). If there was a rpg like that that would be the one I'd vote for.

Morrowind, with both BG 1&2 and M&M 6&7 in a close second place.

Yep, those two are classics. It would be interesting to see a poll where PS:T was included. And, I do love NWN, it's just not as good as the BG series.
