Personally I've never understood why people try Heroin or crack in the first place. I had some by accident once, a so called mate (not any longer) passed me a spliff with heroin in it and didn't tell me It's not an experience I would recommend or ever go near again.

Just for the record, I'm not anti-drugs full stop, but for goodness sake if people want to experiment why not stick to the ones that aren't likely to kill them.

8 years ago, my best friend died of a heroin od. He fell asleep at a friends house across the street after leaving my house about 1 in the morning, and never woke up. His brother had sold him the dope, and therefore went into to massive depression, and od'ed, and died, 6 months later. I smoked pot alot at the time, but never did heroin. I tried to tell Seth (my friend) all the time to quit that crap. Words mean nothing to a junky.

He is honored by me with a tatoo on my leg, and am going to honor him more with naming my new son (just had the ultrasound on thursday) Seth.
You may be thinking, why all the honor for a junky. Well, I never had a brother, so he was the closest thing.

HAving grown up in an area where drugs were extremely common, I have also lost dear friends because of ODs. When I was 14, my older brother came home from his best friend's funeral. His best friend had ODd on heroin. He promised me that if he ever found out that I had even looked at drugs, he would beat me to a pulp. Not a very loving way of providing protection, but it worked for me. I'm 20 now, and although I have come into (rare) encounters with drugs, I have never taken them. And I thank my brother for that.

My condolences. I've never had to deal with death of someone close so I can only imagine what you, your famliy and that boy's family is going through.

One of the life-shaping experiences in my life was when I realized that my friends thought there was nothing wrong with doing drugs (smoking too for that matter).The feeling of invincibiltiy is one thing....(I know how it felt like until I busted both my legs.). Call me an idealist but life has to change, society has to change.

Don't mistake me Vaskez (I did say I was in a hurry! [img]tongue.gif[/img] ) I don't sympathise when someone takes the "easy way" out.

I think you'll find that a lot of these people trying to look cool are trying to compensate for a lack of self esteem, perhaps their parents always call them stupid or don't pay enough attention to them, or plain just don't care. The bottom line is, these people could possibly (not definitely, but possibly) have been influenced by others to deal with things in other ways. (Horatios bro, for instance)

Deepest sympathies, Antryg. Working in my profession, I have seen so much damage and needless death because of drugs. I will have to agree with Sir K that many druggies (I won't call them junkies, it sound too dramatic, like in the movies) come from less than ideal homes. I have a patient that I have been seeing since she was small, and now she is 15 - bright, beautiful, witty. Her mother gave her prescription drugs to sell at school, giving her a dollar for every one she sold. Now, she is expelled and has quite given up on herself. I saw her the other day at Walmart, high as a kite. I guess that I don't really understand.

That's terrible Antryg, you have my sympathies. It must be very frustrating having 17 people you have known die from drugs, and not being able to do one thing about it. Heroin is a hideous drug, and I'm just glad that I never tried it when I was younger, as it apparently addicts you the first time (from what I've heard anyway). I think it would help, at least in a small part, if the media would show more things about how hard drugs destroy lives, and not just with news reports, but I'm talking documentaries, etc., showing actual people and how their lives are now that they are addicted. You see a small fraction of these types of things on TV every once in awhile, but I think there needs to be a flood of them to make a real difference. Not to say it would work on everyone, but information is a powerful tool.

Slightly off topic (but still relevant), I remember in the late 80s when AIDS first was discovered and it was making a lot of airtime. It seemed it was all over TV every day, lots of interviews and documentaries on people who had the virus, information all over the place. It sure had my attention, and everyone elses. But now, at present, all that is gone. AIDS is hardly ever mentioned now on TV or anywhere else. I heard on the news a few weeks ago (they did a poll) that a lot of people now think AIDS is no longer a problem! It's worse than it ever was, nobody has found a cure, hello! I dunno, I just think in a way that the ceasing of the media attention about it has brought on such ignorance.
