Well, it is quite a bit better than IWD1 in content, and the 3rd edition ruleset makes the gameplay ten times as enjoyable. I'd get it if I were you.

IWD2 is far better than IWD1 Iwould not play IWD1 again but Iam now onto my 3rd go of IWD2 each time at a harder level although, that said, it is with the same party. But i do think BG1+2 are better than the IWD series.

I'm not sure that I would agree that it is "better" than IWD1, but it is different. The 3rd edition rules are nice but I don't think they add THAT much to the gameplay proper. Still it was a fun game, although in fairness I liked IWD1 too.

AS for being "non-linear", IWD2 is as linear as IWD1 is.

Yea, there is little to IWD2 that does not follow the main plot. However, IMHO it makes up for this with great gameplay. I like the 3rd edition rules better, since you have litterally hundreds of combinations of classes, like rogue/ranger/paladin/mages and monk/cleric/sorcerers.

BG2 has cool kits like kensai and archer, but IWD2 has cool races like Drow and deep gnome.

BG2 probably has more replayability and much more mod content, but IWD2 has, in my opinion, better fights and more enemies. I've always been a fan of slicing through armies of moderately powerful enemies, and I found BG2 to be overloaded with single, powerful bosses.

The games each have very high and low points. However, considering how low IWD2 goes these days in stores, I would buy it and try it out.

Like Micah I liked IWD1
better than 2. I thought it had a more solid story and better overall feel to it. But to each there own there. I would buy IWD1 before 2 play 1 a couple times and if you like it get 2. The story in 2 makes more sense when played after 1.

Yeah, I agree about the 3rd edition rules being nice and imho an improvement over the old 2nd rules. I didn't think the drow or deep gnomes added much to game play although some folks will surely disagree with that.

You do raise a good point though .. and that is the price. The price on IWD2 has to be near rock bottom - making it an excellent buy.

Good choice. Remember to stop by the forum if you need any help, or want a legion of experts to ridicule you poor attempt at a party and completely revamp it with 7 way multiclasses, the best stats possible, and the craziest combinations that make the least amount of sense.

I'm only half joking
