Okay, before I get flamed or something, I've been reading (and occasionally posting on) Ironworks for months now. I'm not trolling here or trying to get anyone angry. I'm just very curious about something.

If any of you read this post and understand what the title is referring to (and have researched the topic a bit), I'm really curious what your thoughts on the matter are.

When my dad first brought the topic of Nibiru up with me, it was in January. My initial reaction to what he said and the websites I read regarding it was essentially "what a bunch of hooey." (well, not exactly that, but this IS a family-friendly messageboard, after all!)

However, over time I've read more and talked more with my dad and I'm starting to feel that, at least from a scientific/academic perspective, the whole controversy of Nibiru has some merit to it. Enough merit that I'm a little concerned about what the future holds. I haven't yet started really preparing or changing my life in any way, but I'm trying to find a way to present the topic to a few of my loved ones.

I don't expect anyone to fully believe it just yet; heck, I don't fully believe it yet! However, I am cautious enough that I want to explain it just enought to them so that if the signs do come to pass and Nibiru becomes all too real to deny (for those of us who learned of it beforehand), I want them to believe me so they will be willing to go with me to safety. I'd hate to face life without the people I hold most dear. (And, well, you could kind of even make the point that I'm trying to present a bit of a heads-up to all the great folks on Ironworks, to do with as you wish)

Anyway, besides my dad, most anyone I would talk to about this in my life would probably think I'm crazy (yes, I'm worried my girlfriend might think I'm totally nuts, though that's probably just because it would hurt if she did). So, I figured I would just throw it out here and see if anyone else is thinking about these things and, if so, what are your thoughts?

And yes, I never explained what Nibiru is because I'm looking for people who've already heard of and investigated a bit about it. I already know the reactions many people would have if this is their first time hearing about it: probably the same as my initial reactions! And I'm not interested in provoking a "flame Farscry because he's looney!" incident.

Well...
I know of 2 topics...

Are you asking about "Planet X", the hidden planet orbiting past Pluto?
or
the Metaphysical aspect, that said planet is the home of a super race?

Well... Both topics are somewhat related RudeDawg, but I'm speaking in particular of "Planet X". I prefer to refer to it by the Sumerian name of Nibiru, as "Planet X" has become such a popularized term and there's a lot of disinformation out and about regarding it. I figured, if anyone knew what I was talking about (Nibiru) that would mean they know more than just the standard "oh yeah, that fake planet that's really an asteroid or something?"

I'm just curious if anyone on IW has read up much on Nibiru and has their own thoughts on the matter. I don't care if anyone disagrees with me, I just don't want to be ridiculed.

No ridicule from here, trust me.
I've read, and listened to advocates, about this. BOTH aspects. It's interesting...

Some who talk about it just think of the subject from the viewpoint of the planet itself, whether or not it exists, or if its orbit will bring it into view. (I think 2003 is the current exected date)

Otherws have tried to convert me into a psuedo-religion. I call it "psuedo" not to ridicule, but because it does not involve a deity or a creator. Again, interesting ideas.

My beliefs are hard won and very personal.
I'm not a believer, but I respect people's choices.

Well, it goes to show where my brain has been lately. I was thinking, "now why would someone flame you over a BG2 monster" when I realized that was NISHIRUU, not NIBIRU! LOL it's been a long day.

I still don't see where you'd get the idea you'd get flamed over Nibiru. I remember reading something about it a long time ago; supposedly a giant planet with a highly elliptical orbit, something akin to a comet. It's quite possible that such a planet exists, especially with the eccentricities of the orbits of Neptune and Pluto that can't be accounted for by any of the gravitational pulls of the other planets. However, my memory of what I read about said planet is sketchy at best. Any information you wish to share would be appreciated.

I can assure you, any flames going on in here and we'll put a stop to that immediately!

"Nishiruu"....Saz, you've been gaming too dang long!!

Well, you guys are really lowering my apprehension, so here goes.

Basically, most of the current theories (that I've been reading; I may not be finding many good alternative theories to read as well) are that Nibiru is the tenth planet, and a rather large one at that. It allegedly has, as you've mentioned, a highly elliptical orbit. In fact, the theory is that Nibiru's orbit is even more elliptical than Pluto's (and is the primary reason Pluto's is even elliptical in the first place).

The thing that has me concerned is if certain parties are correct in their belief that the orbit of Nibiru would bring it quite close to the sun. So close, in fact, that it would pass within the earth's orbit.

Now, the danger isn't so much that Nibiru will smack into the earth and destroy us all. (mathematical balance and orbits and all that stuff should keep that from happening, or something like that) The danger is instead that Nibiru is so large and dense and possesses such a powerful magnetic field that it will thoroughly disrupt most of our planet's natural cycles.

RudeDawg, you're right about how many people believe the passage will occur in 2003 (or sometime right around then), and that's my concern. It could have catastrophic effects to life on earth and cause a terrible disruption to modern civilization with all the sudden volcanic and seismic activity, not to mention the insane tidal activity and magnetic pole disruptions. (Some even believe that our magnetic poles and rotation would be altered, though that sounds very extreme)

So anyway, I'm not totally convinced of this, but the theory is well-developed enough (with basis in science and historical evidence) that I certainly give it some credence. And if it IS true, this is the kind of event that you have to prepare for: find a relatively safe location away from flood plains, fault lines, and mountainous regions in order to "ride out the storm."

That's why I want to implant the germ of possibility into the minds of those I love, so that if this DOES come to pass (assuming I recognize the signs in time ) they come with me to safer ground for at least the time it takes to see what happens. Better safe than sorry, ya know?

Anyway, I'm curious what other perspectives are out there.

And Sazerac, I'm guilty of getting non-gaming words/names mixed up with gaming ones quite often myself!

I believe (correct me if I'm wrong, please) that Farscry is referring to one of the beliefs that Nibiru is : (choose one, or mix-and-match)
1) home to the Summerian gods.
2) The Messianic star (the star that shone when Jesus was born)
3) part of the Hopi Prophecy of Return (thios is how I first heard about it. I'm part Hopi, and my uncle's are still trying to get me to practice the family religion)
4) home to a Reptilian race, the Anunnaki, who visited Earth and were referred to in the bible as the Nephilim (hybrid sons of angels and women) otherwise known as Those Who From Heaven To Earth Came.

These are a few of the "psuedo-religious/metaphysical" ideas of Nibiru that I have heard. There are MANY others. None of which I am an expert.

I agree that the idea of a "super" planet with a HUGE orbit is valid, but I think Farscry is looking for a discussion of the other ideas.

Oh, and by the way, I'm REALLY paraphrasing and summarizing the details here. I don't feel like writing a dissertation.

Rudedawg - Actually, I'm interested in the "superplanet" as you've probably guessed by now.

Although yeah, the religious implications are pretty intriguing as well, though I myself don't hold any of them as my personal beliefs.
