If you are still running Norton, that could be it. I installed Avast!, and a lot of it's features were disabled until I uninstalled Norton.

Ah. Well mine was custom-made-to-order.
Because Mac's have all that free bundled software that et's you make music, DVDs, comics, podcasts, web pages, photoalbums, loops, home videos, home-cooked meals, nuclear reactors and cloned sheep all at once!

And they're not "more expensive" than a pc.

The mini mac is just $500 and uses your pc monitors/keyboard/mouse and can even run windows on it!

Well I've used AVG for a good 4 years at least now, and have never had any troubles. Use it on all my machines and I'm virus free. AVG doesn't block any programs either, it's not a firewall!

I took Norton out before putting anything in. Is something else causing this, like firewalls or something?

First thing you need is a support person at your ISP who's more knowledgeable about computers... removing your antivirus to get your email is a lot like using a bulldozer to clean off the table after dinner. Might be just a *wee* bit of overkill.

First things first... please define the problem. You say "can't get my email"... what does that mean? What email client are you using, what settings are you using, and so on.

Obviously, you don't need to share your user ID and password. But the basic configuration info can tell a lot.

Second... what else is running? ZoneAlarm? Windows firewall? Some other firewall? What do their logs say?

Third... what other protector programs do you have? Spybot, AdAware, and so on. They may be blocking something out.

Fourth... what browser are you using? Browsers can put domains on a blacklist, and if your email domain is there, you could be in tough doo-doo.

Start with that and let's see what's what.

I'm using Firefox and Thunderbird, as everyone should. I downloaded all those freebees from the other thread. AVG free, adaware, zonealarm and I think spybot. I don't see it in my programs though. When trying to retrieve my mail I get an error message and like I said we tried for 2 hours to fix it and finally had to remove AVG free. Then today the same thing happened when put in avast. Same error message. Something about POP3 server... I can't remember now.

I put avast back in so I could get the error message. Then I took it out to access the internet.

That makes me think about the setup in your email account. The fact that sympatico.ca is responding to this message with *nothing* is quite interesting.

I'd wander through the Avast settings to see if there's anything in there. Looking at the AVG settings on my machine, I'd disable the AVG Resident Shield and the Email Scanner to start with and see what happens. Nothing else should be blocking it.

You might want to pick up HiJack This (www.merijn.org) to see what it finds. Note that it's geek-friendly, not user-friendly. It will give you lots of false positives... better than skipped negatives.

Mac's are like a pretty Lamborghini car shell. But the insides is a Ford. It does a few neat things with photos, but cannot match a PC in speed, nor software. (And can't handle 1gig PSD Photoshop files well.)

The hardware is WAY overpriced--laughably so--like $4000 for a mac that will do and have the power my $1800 rig cost.

Reason mac's don't get virii is cause they attack what people use the most.. But that is changing. Loads of virii are hitting mac's new OS.

I do think since they are using Intel, and becoming compatible, it's a good thing. I can do everything a mac does with Photoshop, Elements, 3DS Max, and Premiere.

Don't get me wrong, they are nice. I *Started* out on a Commodore 64, and had an Amiga (A god system at the time, with the best graphics--before CGA and EGA, yet looked GREAT!)

Played Bruce Lee on the Commie through 4 times in one sitting.
