I saw it on barnes and nobles, and it got pretty good reviews, and the impression I was getting was that it was REALLY good for beggining players... even better than the Player's Handbook Core Rulebook 1, I think. It only costs ten bucks, and comes with a bunch of stuff, so, has anybody heard of this?

Looks like (online) its a beginner's set. More like a little of everything you need to play, but no whole manual. Like the old basic set, where Elves and Halflings were CLASSES. Get the core books is my recomendation.

I remember the old basic D&D game, where elves where a class. And priest had a charisma requirement of 13, if I remember right. I remember the first rulebook I bought. There was a little single player game in it, that you played using a pre-built character, to learn a little about D&D. I still remember the rust monster that was in there, scary stuff.

One of my favorite quest/setting is still The keep on the borderland or something like that. It was a while ago. I still have it, somewhere.

Ooooohhhhh! I remember Keep of the Borderlands - I still have the keep map!! (Several generations of my players have gotten to win/take over/ inheret the Keep).

Get the Core Rule Books. AD&D and D&D used to be separate. Now this beginning $10 teaser is there to get you into the game. It's a dumbed-down version of a good game. Spring for $30 and a PHB.

BTW, if you wanna know what D&D is, play most any of the games discussed on this board. IMHO, Shadows of Amn is as close as a one-player computer game will ever come to D&D.

SoA to D&D? Are you sure you've not mistaken these two? I would say SoA for AD&D and ID2 for D&D.

Sorry for not being specific, Nanobyte.

Personally, I think the multiple-quest non-linear setup of SoA makes it more similar to Ad&D and/or D&D than ID2. Plus, I'm playing 3d Ed. game right now, and if I ever DM again it will certainly be 2d ed. (modified to my preferences of course) which is a MUCH better system than the "sure you want to be an Ogre-Magi Fighter/Thief/Gardener/Cleric - sure!!" system of 3d ed.

My DM doesn't like to handle ECL, so it's pretty basic when we play. You certainly have a unique set of players
