As many of you know I have the high position of being a supermarket bag boy. Well my boss yelled at me and accused me of stealing money out of the regester. Even though I have no idea how to work the damn thing. I was never trained on how to use one although I could probably figure it out. Anywho I feel like quitting. He is where the problem arrises, If i quit i will look guilty although im not. I can get a better job waiting tables though so I am not sure what to do. Any suggestions guys?!?!?!?!!?

Did you ask him where the hell he got the idea from that you were stealing? I mean: he should have a VERY good reason to accuse you of something like that. If not, he could get into serious trouble for his behaviour against his employees.
Anyway; if I had a boss like that, I would just let him sink in the sh*t real good. I don't take things like that easily, makes my temper go through the roof. And you're not 'guilty' if you quit. Just tell your boss that you don't want to work for someone who treats his employees badly, and accuses them of all sorts of things. Tell him that if he doesn't apologise, or at least act normal to you, you will quit your job. |

His reason is I bag for that register and his kid works that register and money is missing so hmmmm blame it on me. He is wanting to press charges and yes I did freak out on him. I'll probably get fired anyway.
The thing is I hate being accused for somthing I didnt do. I see his standpoint though I need money (turning 16 soon ) and i always ask for extra work. Oh well ill see how this plays out. |

Did he accuse you in public? You can preemptively strike and publicly accuse him of slander. You could talk to a lawyer, or at least say you will.
How much are we talking about here? I roomied with a guy in college who had been the son of a grocery store owner. Trust me -- it was the son that did it. |

I'd agree with TL, and I'd make one change to your daily routine when you're there -- I would not carry any money with me to work. Leave it in the car with a note saying how much was there, but don't carry anything on you. If you're accused again, ask to have the police called immediately so you can be searched by them for the supposed money. Also suggest that the cashier be searched, whoever that is, since it is far easier for a cashier to get into the register than for a bagger, regardless of your training (or lack thereof).
In fact, I'd suggest he contact the police to investigate. If you're in the clear, you've got nothing to lose by having them take a look. About the only thing this job will give you, aside from a paycheck, is a reference... and at your age, the value of those references drops quickly. I can't remember the jobs I held at 16 or thereabouts. 'Course, I've been around a bit and feel comfortable handling an aggravated store owner like that. I'd do the investigative bit -- how much is missing, why do you think it's missing, why do you think I took it, is there anyone else worth considering as a suspect, why or why not, etc.... For reference, back when I was about 23, I worked part-time in a pizza place in addition to my regular job. I did a lot of different things, including cashiering. One day, I came in and counted my till... it was $1 over what it was supposed to be. I told the manager it was off, and he produced a piece of paper from his pocket that said "Your till has $1 extra". Turned out it was a test, and I passed. Now, I won't open discussions on the ethics of that test, but I could see where they were coming from -- I was a relatively new hire doing a lot of things very fast, and they wanted to make sure they were protected. Good luck. *B* |

If you work for a corporate store, I would suggest consulting the Human Resources department. Tell them the situation that is occurring and also tell them that you are considering leaving and taking on another job. Legally, when a member of management makes an accusation against an employee, they need to have documentation to back up their claim. If they do not, they are not allowed to confront the suspect and place the blame with them.
Seeing as how your manager/boss has already accused you of committing the act, I would fill a grievance with Human Resources stating that he or she has created a hostile work environment (This is substantiated by your feelings of wanting to quit and your fear of being fired due to this incident). In a worse case scenario, you will help prevent this from happening to future employees. In the case this store does not have a Human Resources department, tell them you are going to consult a lawyer pertaining to the above and you wish to fill a formal grievance. Even small businesses have to abide by this rule. |

I agree with Maelakin. Take it up with Human Resource. I would avoid his boss unless he/she is fair. I just don't trust upper management. They tell you how to do things when they've not done it themselves.

You guys missed the bit that the store OWNER is the one who accused him. Can't go over his head.
I worked for a privately-owned grocery as a bagger, cashier, and stock boy, so I sorta know what he means. I saw others get in trouble for stealing. They always did it in private, of course. You should know that a grocery store operates on a 1% profit margin. If someone steals a candy bar, the store generally has to sell the whole box just to break even. Imagine what taking a $20 from the till is like. They are very antsy about theft. That said, I do agree that you should question them and ask for proof. If you feel like it, offer to prove up your innocence -- but it is not your responsibility to do so. |
