Why did Bethesda take out all the guilds? the imperial legion was soooo cool. i really wish you could still be them, and there were so many different guild you could choose from. you could make different quickie char. to try them all. man, anyone know what the deal is?

I cant think of any other than saving development time. You put the finger on the single biggest letdown of the game IMHO.

Lorewise, Cyrodrill is the heart of the empire and has been an imperial country for a long time. Their imperial legion/cults do not need new recruits. Morrowind is a new territory for the imperial empire and they need more recruits to help with 'controling' the area.

Being said that, It's strange how cyrodrill is the heart of the empire but their forts are manned by bandits, skeleton, ghosts etc etc while in Morrowind the forts there are manned by the Imperial Legion themselves. Funny no?

I guess they shouldn't have sent away all those troops to faraway lands...

Those are the joinable factions that provide services, quests and, dare i say, a story of sorts. I've not included the the "token" factions of Oblivion.

Yep, Oblivion does fall short.

In all seriousness, I think a guild for Clerics would have been a huge improvement.

Quite frankly, having my Imperial Cleric in Full Mithril sans helmet with a Silver mace looks Awesome! But, without a guild... it just seems to not fit.
