OK... A friend bought me Baldur's Gate - The Original Saga. I figured, "Haven't played for a while, dump the old version and install the spiffy new one." {Hated the multiple CDs and patches for the 1st}

Anyhow, damned thing keeps crashing back to my desktop. I thought this version was fully patched. To make matters more irritating, I cannot find an active site with a patch for the "Original Saga." Any clues, folks?

Next, again, it's been a while. Despite the crashes to the desktop, I'm muddling through. Saved/earned enough coin to buy some good stuff at the Thunderhammer Smithy. I can't recall, is there another set of full plate mail to be bought, stolen or looted off a corpse anywhere else? Because of their annoyingly low strength numbers, Jaheira and Khalid have Ankeg plate (one forged/bought from the shell, the other found). Imoen has the Shadow Armor and, I protected my sorry butt with the full plate. Minsc is wearing plate mail and taking a lot more hits than I. I'd like to get him in full plate as I fear Boo might "take one" for the big fella.

Now, the RANT!!! (SPOILER)

If my fighter character is the progeny of a god, why in the wide, wide world of the Forgotten Realms do BOTH Khalid and Jaheira have more stinking hit points than I??? I still don't know diddly about D&D, AD&D or even A&D ointment... I do, however, know enough to be offended by the twit and his whining wench being able to take more damage than me... There.... I said it... don't feel any better, though... makes Gatekeeper look appealing, though

yes. there is another one either in the dwarf mines or in the gate. and if you have TOTSC i am about 95% sure that there is another regular full plate in durlag's tower. but don't go there until your theif is above 80% in both "trap detection" and "lock picking". and for that matter, your whole party should be at the top of their game. durlag's tower is about a fifth of the game and is a real challenge for anybody! atleast for those who don't CHEAT !!

if an npc has more hit points than you, there are two possible reasons. first, your constitution is low (below 18), or you are not saving your game before you level up. if you have an 18 for your constitution and still have low hp, it's because you are not reverting to your saved game and trying it again to see if you get a better role.

DON'T USE GATEKEEPER!! i downloaded gk and it completly ruined the game. i can only speak for bg1 and will tell that it is a game that is half story or plot and half combat. it is nothing like diablo or any other power oriented game. so if you use GK you might as well throw the game in the garbage!!

i was lucky for the fact that i almost finished the game all the way through and experienced bg without cheating at all. then i started a new game and used GK. after about 5 game hours i became extremely bored. because even if you tell yourself that i'm only going to change a few things here and few things there with your character, YOU WILL eventually go all the way. and TRUST ME it will ruin your gaming experience!

The second full-plate is on the human 'leader' in the bandit camp

There is also on the dwarven 'statue' in the room with the three greater wyverns (In Durlags Keep)

HP:

If you are a fighter you can get 10 hp pr lvl + your CON bonus (+4 if you have a CON=18) - just keep trying until you get the desired result.

Something you might find interesting if you are a fighter.

There are tomes in the game, that permanantly increase your base stats.

The "Manual Of Bodily Health" (Constitution) is in the Lighthouse, in the Flesh Golem Cave.

The "Manual Of Avoidance" (Dexterity, My Favourite ) is in the Thieves Guild in Baldur's Gate, behind Black Lily. That comes in handy for increasing AC.

And the Strength (And Wisdom) are under Candlekeep, in the Catacombs. Strength is the obvious one for fighters!

I can find the Intelligence and Charisma if you are interested.

All these tomes are handy if you are planning on importing your Character into BGII, because you do not gain so many stat increases in BGII, infact, you lose some base stats in BGII! The game sometimes gets on my nerves, I don't like giving up stats!

You're welcome!

Thanks for the help, folks. I did not realize that one can "roll again" on a level up... never done that.

Also, I agree with Sir Heinrich - I don't like cheating, I would much rather die fair and square (even if a stinking Kobold gets lucky). That being said, I do have Gatekeeper loaded. I have used it twice when I did something stupid and had to have my hard drive wiped and reformatted. I had a couple of legitimate characters with cool stats. After trying to recreate them the "proper" way, I resorted to Gatekeeper (I ain't getting any younger and after a few hours, I was close to the original stats but not there).

My fighter's stats are:
Half Elf, Chaotic Good
STR 18/98
DEX 18
CON 18
INT 9
WIS 9
CHR 14

I bumped the charisma, sacrificing intelligence & wisdom, in hopes of getting stuff cheaper. Didn't work until my reputation went up. Also, early on, it was my past experience that "tanks" work best early on. Mages become more valuable in the later stages, in my opinion.

Thanks again for the assist(s).

You don't have to keep reloading. Just go into game options and set the difficulty to an easy level. At the easiest levels, you automatically get the maximum hit points when you level up. Just remember to set it back before you resume playing.

You're thinking of BG2, Billy. With BG2, even if you're playing the game on Insane difficulty, you can always pop the game over to Easy or Normal if you want to get the maximum HP gain from your Level Up, then switch back. But with BG1, there's only one difficulty, so the only way of adjusting HP rolls is to Save & Reload.

No - you CAN change BG1's difficulty setting. If you go into Options you get a slider for changing difficulty level. Default sets it in mid position. Left = easy, right = hard.
