Ive been looking into it.
Their class-based magic "resistances" are saving throw modifiers:
Gnome +5 vs Rod/Staff/Wand and Spells
Dwarf +5 vs Paralyze/Poison/Death, Rod/Staff/Wand and Spells
Halfling +5 vs Paralyze/Poison/Death, Rod/Staff/Wand and Spells

There are also saving throw modifiers based on wisdom.
Supposedly there are saving throw modifiers based on class also.

From IWD, my halfing fighter/thief (17 wis) had saving throws ~2,
while my dwarf fighter (3 wis) had saving throws ~5

The manual lists halflings as "highly resistant", and dwarves as "naturally resistant". Although their saving throw modifiers are identical. Hmmm

Actual Magic Resistance, i think, is the % of damage recieved from a magic-based attack that is nullified.

Not really
Magic resistance allows you to completely avoid some spells. For example, if you have 25% mr, it means that you have 25% chance to completely avoid a spell. If you dont, you will take all the damage (or whichever its effect is)

Those improved saving throws simply mean that they are more likly to be less affected by some spells, not that they are actually going to resist them. Basicly if you cast a fire ball at a dwarf then he is much more likly to take half damage where as a human probably would take full damage, this is because the dwarf is more likly to make there save vs spells because they have -5 or whatever to it. They will not be able to completley avoid the affects of a fire ball as a magic resistant character might.

More important thing is that magic resistance also works against spells that do not allow saving throws.
