Wendy's manager gets shot over chili sauce

A Wendy's manager was shot several times in the arm early Tuesday trying to protect the restaurant's chili sauce, authorities said.

A man in the drive-through argued with an employee because he wanted more of the condiment, police said. The worker told the customer that restaurant policy prohibited a customer from getting more than three packets.

The man insisted on 10, reports said. The employee complied, but police said the customer wanted more.

When the manager came out to speak to the man, the customer shot the manager, Miami-Dade police spokeswoman Mary Walters said. He was taken to Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, police said.

The shooter fled with a female passenger.

"I did not know I got shot," store manager Renal Frage told WTVJ-TV in Miami. "When I went back to the office, I saw blood pumping out of my arm, and I was shocked. I was checking myself out and couldn't believe I got shot over some chili sauce."

Frage added: "I got shot over chili sauce. I was trying to figure while in the hospital why someone would shoot me over some chili sauce."

5 will get you 10 that the shooter didn't possess a legal firearm. In that instance, it wouldn't matter what the laws were. I'm sure nobody ever gets shot anywhere where firearms are illegal though...

True RTB, but in countries where firearms are illegal (or much harder to get) the chance of some nutter prepared to shoot you over chili sauce is probably lower.

Not always the case, sometimes its easier to bypass legal channels. You don't need a license to buy a gun illegally, and the dealers don't care about any waiting period or background checks. The only real challenge if any is finding who to talk to.

Countries where firearms are illegal would probably make getting them easier, once you found where to do so, as Firestormalpha pointed out. It's not so easy to get a firearm here, nor is it easy to get a permit to carry said weapon around. Which leads me to believe that the shooter in this article wasn't in possession of a legal firearm. For one thing, ballistics tests would trace said firearm right to him. No matter what gun laws are in place, criminals will have guns, period. I don't care if they are in the UK, or Canada, or right here at home, and criminals are the people that are most likely to shoot you over some stupid crap like this.

Nice little map at the bottom. Fact is, countries with looser firearm laws have many more guns available than countries with tougher laws and apparently as a result, higher instances of gun related crime.

But maybe it's cultural too. In the last couple of years I've worked in: Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines, Japan, Thailand, Korea, New Zealand, Canada, USA and of course Australia. The USA is hands down the most dangerous, violent and disturbing country I have experienced. I like many things about this place, but it's something I have to factor in when I come here. Nowhere am I more alert and distrustful of people on the street...

On the graphs in the second link, it indicates that the US has almost 9x the population of Canada, and yet the crime rates with or without guns is only roughly double. Seems to me that it's more dangerous in Canada, per capita, than in the US, if roughly 1/9 of the people commit 1/2 as much crime. Hmm, I guess statistics really are meaningless. How many of those homicides, for example, were committed with registered, licensed firearms? How many were committed by police in the line of duty?

Essentially, if the US had 9x the crime rate with guns, I'd say this was a valid point, but since the evidence seems to indicate otherwise, it's kinda facetious to use as an argument for stiffer gun control laws. Obviously, the argument is flawed, since a country with 9x the population, and 30x the number of firearms overall only commits almost 2x the number of crimes with said guns. Personally, I feel safer here.
