Are you sure you are actually quoting it. It's actually a viscious circle that gets back to the original question. Can you prove that you are actually doing it, or was it a figment of someones imagination. I took philosophy in university for two years (only because I had to for my degree) and proving something other than a mathematical equation is next to impossible. When I saw the title of the thread it sent shivers down my spine bringing back all kinds of bad memories about proving existance, why is a table a table and all manner of brain twisting questions. Look at it from a non physical point of view. Did you just quote my post, or is it an elaborate dream of some higher power? Are you actually sitting at your computer? Do you have any control over your life, or is it all pre determined? Are the choices and decisions that we make daily all ready planned? Is your brain beginning to hurt yet?

lets ask Descartes about this one. "descartes can we proove our existance?" Descartes replies "I think therefore I am." If I am conscious and I know I am conscious. No matter what you can prove or disprove about the rest of existance. your consciousness means that you exist. Descartes measured this against being tricked, by an all powerful demon, being insane, and one other thing which i forget, but they all measured up and this is the given that all philosphers use when asked this question.

But are you thinking are is it pre determined? For example. You are deciding whether or not to go into the kitchen to grab another beer, or go to the washroom first. Perhaps somewhere a group of omnipitent beings are gathered around a table. One of the beings grabs a dice, "If a roll a 1-3 he goes to the kitchen, a 4-6 he goes to the bathroom."
We think therefore we are, but are we actually thinking?

But as I said above, to do this he assumes the existance of his own consciousness. This is in fact only proven if he is proven to exist, which we have discussed he is actually trying to do in the first place. He cannot help you I'm afraid, because he kinda already assumes he exists when trying to prove it, and not assuming that he does leaves you without a proof.

indeed. your own consciousness is, in itself, "sensed".

well maybe all these posts dont prove that we exist neccesarily but it proves that "something" exists (cant really put this into words if u havent noticed already) "i think therefore i am" means that u "are" even if you are only a figment of somethings imaginationor or a predermined thing so you you exist in some sense of the word...

it could also be that i actually am the only person who has ever been alive and that everything that has ever occured has come from my twisted imagination...
by the way has anyone here read "Sophie's World" by jostein gaardner (or gaarder)

this post has made me wanna read it again

~ if you cut me, do I not bleed ~

~ if I cut myself, I really bleed quite badly ~ (darn razor knives) therefore I hurt and that proves I exist Wolfie. (short but sweet )

I have my birth certificate, marrage license, drivers license, social security card , passport, veterans administration card and a few other forms of I.D. so I guess according to the I.R.S. I do exist.
As far as proving to myself that I exist, the constant pain in my arthritic ankle gives me up to the second reminders. As far as proveing to you I exist if we ever meet IRL I will smack you a good one , then you will believe

ps--> its a joke , not a threat.

Very simple.

I exist therefore I think, but the existence around me is just a construct made to keep my mind thinking so it will continue my existence, while so you are all just players in my existence.
But you do exist out side my existence in mirror of my existence where you are the main player and I only a construct.
Therefore we all exist in our existence independent of each other existence. While we all co-exist as free floating conscious on a plane of none existence.

In short we all succeed and fail to exist simultaneously
