You only need to put it into the signature area, unless you want this picture to show up in your profile page as your own picture.

BTW it does show up now, so no it does not take time. Older posts though do take some time to get updated.

GIMP is sooo easy to use. See my sig? I made that using GIMP and an 8-bit theatre comic. My second animation ever.
