I’m doing a little research and am wondering about Amn and its aversion to magic.
What history I have been able to find about Amn details the rise of the merchant houses and the governing of the council of six.
Just why are the people of Amn so opposed to magic?
Does it have something to do with the Corthala family?

Most Amnish citizens seems more interested in making money than magic. Perhaps magic brings an element of chaos and generally stirs things up. People won´t go shopping if they are huddling up under a table just because some cranky wizard likes casting Fireballs.

The only reference I can find to it is in the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting book, page 154, notes that 'a series of plagues and monsters released by certain schools of wizards has led Amnian citizens to hold a very poor opinion of spellcasters.' which doesn't tell us anything, really...

Don't think so. Perhaps what Tancred wrote may be a clue? It DOES tell us that some wizards DID cause some chaos with their magic...

it's seems to me that the people of amn devolped a slight aversion to magic and then the government took advantage. they could increase their power(and wealth) by turning the people against any magic, especially unsactioned magic. then the only trusted magic users are the cowls. i have to say for an area that hates mages amn has given rise to an amazing number of kinda to really powerful mages.
