edito this poll only count for fantasy writers?
If not I think the Swedish writer Håkan Nesser is the worst
patient? tolkiens descriptions are a powerful sedative at best. you must have been taking caffeene injections.

sorry, but tolkien's descriptions bore me no end. even the huge battle in book two was duller than watching paint dry. good thing film is an instantly descriptive media.

Uh... I really want to reply to this, but I'm not sure whether you mean Jackson took what was boring, cumbersome and long-winded and made it boring, cumbersome and long-winded on screen, or whether you mean he took what was boring, cumbersome and long-winded in the book and made it watchable. Because I am *not* saying, 'if you think the book is boring, watch the film, it is worse'. I'm saying 'if you think the book is boring, watch the film, you'll probably like that more.'

On the 'boring, cumbersome and long-winded', though... well, that's epic poetry for you. Tolkien's style is based on works centuries old, but that's not bad because he meant it to be that way. I'm not even sure he ever admitted to writing 'novels'. Reading an epic and then complaining that it was too slow, it lacked pace or lingered on the description is like buying a dog and then saying you don't like him because he's hairy and has four legs.

I went for Sara Douglas, because I absolutely hate those Enchanter books of hers... Read the first, forced myself to read the second in hopes it was better (if anything, it seemed worse), and couldn't manage to make myself read the third. It's like a series of horribly-executed fantasdy cliches mixed with the complete elimination of any version of intelligence or logic by the characters, or the author's choices of how events should work out. I mean, for crying out loud... The books give the villain-esque character who plays a large role in the first two books (Bornehold or however Axis's brother's name was spelled, for those of you familiar with the books) a good reason for wanting to mangle the main character, plus the reason why he was so bitter at the main character through the whole time is proven to be true, and the reader's expected to cheer when he main character defeats him? What the heck is this? Plus the main character (and for that matter, ALL the characters) seem to have only about four generic things each they're capable of doing. Plus the plot's pretty poor, plus a lot of other problems... Won't go into a full description currently, methinks, would take too long.
Not my beloved Sara Douglass!!!

She's second only to G.R.R. Martin. Her book isn't your typical Fantasy novel. Instead of being black and white, the characters are shade of gray. Borneheld has his reasons to act as he was, and so did Axis. You are not expected to cheer.

You should have kept reading. By the end of the third book I was crying and cursing Sara Douglass for ever writing such a story. Of course now that I'm over it I'm very happy she did. Any book that can affect me so much is a masterpiece, in my opinion.
