Longsword have faster attack speeds than axes but otherwise their stats are pretty much the same, axes don't do more damage than longswords which i find a bit weird...Axes DO seem to have more powerful enchantments however... choose

ARRRRG - another one!
How many more are there?

Again, it depends how you want to use them.

Axes can be thrown.
They do quite a lot of damage.

Long Swords can be used to backstab.
They also do a lot of damage.

There are very good magical weapons of both types in the game. Depends upon your playing style.

I've always been a fan of the long sword so everyone should know what i'm going to say. I'm not going to diss axes though. Powerful long swords are always more common in the BG games. Axes on the other hand can be thrown, and my second fighter always uses axes. They do good damage, and do have powerful magic. Remember how fun the throwing axe +2 was in Bg?

Probably axes in that proficiencies in axes will count towards both close combat and ranged attackes. Can get +3 axes very early in the game, make killing trolls a lot easier.
