Wow, I had out my May issue of PC Gamer, and on pg 48 they have a great listing of how to clean up and stream-line your comp for gaming. I did the clean up so now only explore and systemtray are up and running when I boot up (I'm on a dial up and like to shut down everytime I'm done instead of staying on all the time). That alone made the games run alot smoother and quicker. I double checked all my drivers with current ones (only one needed updated-done).

And the big thing for dial up users is iSpeed
its at:
http://www.hms.com
it's free to try for 21 days then $10 for purchase.
How did it work? Great! It is easy to install and to set up for your system. I went with the optium setting for dial-ups, rebooted comp, and then hooked up. Down loads were quicker, web sites are quicker (heck even the porn and joke ones ), and more importantly Tribes was better!
Last night, I tried it on 5 diffrent servers, with green connection and yellow connection servers (green means I'm in the 100ms ping time, yellow 101 to 300ms ping time), and since it allows for shorter sending of packets and the ability to send and receive a bit better, the game ran smoother and was alot more fun.
Only had 2 lag slow downs, and one seemed to be server slow. I wasn't as fast as the Low Ping Bastards (LPB), but I was able to keep up and dueling is fun again! WHoohoo! I don't have to go to town and play at the computer game fun center (20 bucks a month membership, 20 freehours 1 dollar an hour after that, they have some nice machines and a T1), and can have fun here at home.

I don't play half-life or counter strike so I can't do a compairision. On Asheron's Call it seemed faster, but then again AC isn't as stressed out by lag as FPS are.

I can't do Tribes2 yet, as I'm saving to upgrade to a pent III 1000 (my 450 ain't gonna cut it from what I hear), dang I want it though!

Go check out the tweaking and if your on a dial up I highly recommend getting iSpeed and using it!

Good gaming to you all!

Jimbo,

You'd be surprised. I just installed Tribes2 on my friends computer and he has a PIII450 and a v3-3000. He is playing with a dial up and it works pretty good. I was surprised. There are a few tweaks you can do to make it work better, such as getting the direct sound mod that lets you adjust the audio debug level, and several other things. Basically, as long as you have lots of ram, and a decent to fair video card you should be ok. It might not be perfect, but definately playable.

Hey thanks!
Yeah I have a decent set-up of pent III 450, 256 ram, and 16mb TnT videocard (Diamond), I never use sound anyway (I actually listened to the BG2 music and was like wow!), so if I can edit out that stuff it might help.

I was just waiting till later since more bug patches will be out, and the lag will be less, plus the prices of pent III are droping, and I might score one for cheap soon. That and I might get another 128 ram (for a total of 384 mb or ram ), or a new graphic card.

How was it? I have been drooling on it, but have not had time to really play it yet. The idea of combined arms operations sounds so cool!

Good gaming ya all
