I have a P3, 9hundred something mgz, 127 ram.. my display is the second from smallest in the setup, forget what that is, I can turn off all the video options, have the player portraits displayed and still have horrid lag. My video.. im not sure about, last time I dealt with system reasources and drivers, it was with DOS a long time ago, and much simpler, but the video is nothing I put in, factory ??? Can anyone tell me how I might speed things up, its so hard getting into this game since battles take forever. Oh and my system resources are at 78% when I start up.. sometimes I ctrl-alt-delete and close everything running but that doesnt help to much.

defrag your harddisk and run the game at 800X600. I have a P4 1.5 GHz, 256 MB RAM and running at 800X600. Everything is as smooth as silk, the only slowdown that I have experienced is the auto mapping while X-Ray vision is active.

Be sure to have you video drivers up to date. Also having a 3D viedo card helps. Don't use much background programs. Have enough disk space.
The game uses aprox 1GB swap file if it can so you need to have a huge file. Set the windows swapfile to at least 256MB and alow it to grow until 1GB. I have my swap fixed at 1GB and the games use it nearly totaly after 5 hours play in a row.

Also, the game can slow up horribly if you keep using the map. After two or three or more map looks, save and reload the game from scratch (leave Wiz 8). Doesn't take long to reload and it does speed it up.

I don't mean to sound too patronizing, but did you go into the options and crank the combat speed and Monster speed to full?
If you're still slowing down, I'd suggest more ram. I was using Win ME with 128 and getting a bit of Lag (on an Athlon 800, 32MB nVidia). Now I'm on Win2000, with 224MB Ram, and it's doing much better. I also switched to DirectX7 from openGL. One thing that's weirded me out... I finally see night-time. on OpenGL, it was daytime all the time, now the moon is out and stuff ever since I switched to DirectX [ 03-06-2002: Message edited by: GenXCub ]
