ROTFLMAO, Like I said they would be a deal, gold dropped like I said. In this deal there are NO ZERO NADA cuts in the budget, only cuts in the rate of increase for future spending. In simple terms instead of increasing the spenidng 7% each year they are going to increase the Spending only 6.9%... Gold prices will once again increase as soon as the fly by night scaredy cat buyers get out, and people realize that this "Compromise BS" isn't going to solve the problem, and our credit rating is downgraded. Moody's and S&P threatened downgrade sure as Hale wasn't because there was any doubt about a default over a lack of debt increase, but rather the unsustainable spending increases. The nations economy grew less then .5% in the first quater, around 1.5% since 2008 but spending has gone up 7%-7.5% each year (not including the non stimulis Stimulis).

Compromise is what has gotten us in this situation, This deal if it is not changed to much deeper real spending cuts or at least holding spending to the current level, will gar-un-tee a default and economic colapse. The US budget is twice the size of the budgets less then 10 years ago, increasing the largest amounts and precentages in the last 3 years. Current deficeits three times the size of the largest deficeit passed by the Republicain Congress and signed by President Bush, twice the size of the deficeit passed by the Democrat Congress and signed by President Bush. We're way over spending, and it will come along and bite us in the rear end.... this deal insures that and insure it will be worse in the future then if we got it right now, which would have been worse then if we had gotten it in 2008.

I'd go for it if we also bring back the same Republican House and Senate we had then.

Yep. Our Richies get to keep their tax loopholes and their Bush tax cuts, our programs for the poor get gutted, and as John D. so very ineloquently indicated, it's minimal all around and all for naught.

I'm so glad to see that the richest 2% have the rest of us at their backs, and that we didn't close some stupid loopholes and raise taxes any at all on these folks who are such great Americans.

Oh, and how did we get here?

Hey, at least we're not Canada:

Truth time: We (meaning our Congress/Leadership): (1) refuse to close corporate and individual tax loopholes that have no logical meaning and take away revenue; (2) cut minimally from crazy spending while acting like it's a real thing; (3) refuse to curb our trading deficit; (4) cow to the rich amongst us who have investments abroad; (5) refuse to regulate a vehemently out-of-control financial sector that sells watermelons while tossing them out a 41st floor window; (6) want to try to save this mess by cutting programs for the poor; (7) still, despite all the evidence otherwise, believe in trickle down voodoo economics; (8) refuse to cut crazy amounts of profligate military spending on wars we don't even care to win; (9) can't be bothered to actually enact a Stimulus that actually works to help our flagging economy; and (10) can't be bothered to care otherwise.

As a Canadian friend of mine put it, Congratulations to us on saving the economy by screwing the economy.

The riches win. Period. All the rest of us suffer. We suffer horrible per-person debt, and a horrible unemployment rate. And no one will step up to do the things that will help us.

I concur. Their solution to the problem is "more of the same stuff that caused the problem in the first place". What is the old definition of insanity? "Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results."

Strangely enough, I have managed to get into a better position during all this mess, for which I am grateful.

I could and would solve all our current problems if given the chance to do so; I could get a lot done in 4 years. Unfortunately, I suspect you wouldn't support me doing so.

What I want to know is, when do we start talking about job creation? Isn't that what the real problem is? More people have jobs, more people pay taxes, less use of support programs, more consumption to inject into the economy, etc.

Ironworks Forum Re: Economy

Businesses aren't going to hire people if they think that their corporate taxes are going to increase or if tax benefits/loopholes they currently enjoy are going to go away. The only way for a government to "create" jobs would be to give money directly to businesses for hiring people through some sort of incentive program...but this wastes money, so if you are going to give away money from the government then you might as well lower corporate taxes by that amount. I know--it's a vicious circle.

Businesses are still too scared to expand their payrolls because they worry too much about the economy. Banks don't want to lend to businesses because they are worried about the economy. People are worried about the economy because businesses aren't hiring. Who is going to make the first move? I don't know.

Actually, the very best way for government to create jobs is let out the contracts to do more fixing up of our dated and dangerously dilapidated infrastructure. Some was done, about a 10th of what was needed to drive an economic recovery.
