I'm Charwood Castle fighting fire elementals and slaags and getting 4 and 23exp respectively. They sure seem tougher than the exp. I'm getting. It takes all the fun out of it. It's not my my fault I'm only getting here now. It just makes the area really boring, even though it's challenging.

What level are you? If you are greater than the challenge rating (CR) of your encounters then the experience for "taking them out" decreases.

It's normal. It'll be so with other creatures as well. By chapter 3 and 4 expect a signifacnt decrease in the xp you get from killing... Like Arbromor said it's because of your high level.

Yes, I know about the lvl thing, but it's still a shame that you fight demons which are pretty tough going solo and you get 23exp points.

You also need to consider that the experience award for the OC is set at 10% of normal. This, so I've heard, is to offset the fact that in CRPG's there is far more combat than in a regular pencil and paper game. And, if I recall rightly, the original cap for NWN was level 20. So that was another reason for their being cheap.
