Sorcerer's are, by far, better than mages. The only draw-back
is losing out on the experience by not scribing scrolls. If
you're like me, I only use a handfull of spells anyways. Having
only a few to chose from was never a problem, since you can
get by with the few you have.

Why I like sorcerors:

I don't have to prepare anything and can cast any of my spells at any time. Therefore, I don't have to rest constantly and rememorize what I need to go into battle. Overall, better game flow.

Why I like mages:

Two words: Wild Mage.
I don't have ToB yet, but when I do, I have a mage from BG1 that I'm taking through BG2 to kit to a Wild Mage when I get ToB. You cast like a specialist (1 extra spell per level), but without an opposition school, instead there's a 5% (I think) chances that something random happens (good or bad). If you cast a fireball, it could be quadrupled in power, or it can accidently end up being centered on yourself. You could cast summon undead, but end up summoning a cow that falls on your target. The Wild Mage is a perfect cure for the perfectionist or power players. It'll get you back into the fun of the game...

-my 2 cents

Actually, Dundee, I used your list when making mine. There are a couple other sorceror faqs on the web and the list I came up with.

If it weren't for the Sorceror's ability to not have to memorize spells, I would choose a wild mage hands down. But now, it's more of a tie. I think that a wild mage can be used effectively if you monitor what spells you memorize. For example, in BG1, my mage memorized a combination of Magic Missle, Blindness, Chromatic Orb, and an Identify spell. If I ran out of MM, no big deal, I still had my orbs to fall back on, and blindness was pretty useful on both fighters and spellcasters. You can still mage a mage that's as powerful as a sorceror if you use your spells to the fullest potential, IMO. And besides, Sorceror's don't have a chance of dropping a cow on your target's head, wild mages do, and isn't that the most important thing?

On that note, if that happens with your wild mage, what kind of damage is that? Physical, right?

Stick with a plain mage - you get to cast any spell.
