Surely, Jarrad, you know me better than this by now. I do not think Windows is useless because of a "few" security holes. For one, it's more than a few (it doesn't help that I don't have either service pack), but lets not get into that. It hides everything from the user (ever configured Windows at kernel level? Thought not.) , prevents me from booting to a command line without jumping through hoops, has only a basic command line to offer once I'm there, and forces me to use a graphical interface for things as rudimentary as text editing. But still, I have never thought Windows useless - IE, yes; Windows Explorer, maybe; Windows as an OS is bearable and would be excellent with a few design improvements. I just don't like it. I prefer Linux, because it is everything I want from an OS, plus none. And, if Mum had such legitimate reasons, how come she's never told me any? And how come I'm not even allowed to set it up as a dual boot?

Uhh, seeing as your king of Baldurs Gate, I would have thought that you would know that it is possible to NOT do a full install, even your not so unfit that you cant change a cd.
Firstly, I am by no means king of Baldur's Gate. That title is best shared between Dundee and SixOfSpades. And, I have no idea how well a non-full install will work. Especially running it through something like WINE, which I know almost nothing about yet.

I want my choice of Operating System. I don't like Windows, and I still can't understand why people have problems with that. I don't force Linux down your throat or my Mother's, and so I don't think I deserve to have Windows forced down mine.

When everme or luke mention the word Windows, you make a stupid "shuddering" noise and complain about how much "useless" stuff it has in it.
Windows caters for all users, it Graphical interface is there to help people who dont know how to use a computer, learn.
You seem to think that everything that is either: not free or not open source is dodgy, and thats what you tell us.

No one has problems with it, its not that you dont like Windows, its that you hate it without reason, and make fun of everything that is wrong with it, none of us have EVER made fun of anything wrong with Linux

Uhhhh, you constantly try to convince your mother that it is the BEST operating system. And no-one is forcing windows down your throat, its simple, if you dont like it DONT USE IT, its not your computer, its your mothers, so she has the right not to want another OS on there...I wouldnt put Barbie funhouse on my computer just because my sister said it was a good game.....well maybe
So if you want Linux on your computer, then get a job and go and buy your own.

*EDIT, hmmm I think we should stop there, its obvios that I ma right and this is going to seem to most people like an argument.

I actually had this discussion with lennon the other day, about free choice in things, you are both basically saying the same thing but not listening to the other person.
Lennon is saying Linux is good, but he has never said you have to use it, he just (strongly) reccomended it, and provided support for his argument which it looks like you interpreted as him forcefully telling you to use it.
Jarrad, you see no need for change, as windows in good enough for what you want.
And linux is good enough for Lennon, and maybe he wants to use it on his desktop pc, which might be nice for him, and i do feel that it being his computer he should be able to do what he wants with it.

Personally, i'm happy with windows, for me it was free so that's irrelevent anyway

But it isnt his computer, and that is my main point.
Oh and I do agree that Linux is good, im not against it, but im against him always blasting windows for petty things like "having a useless desktop" and so on.

Sorry Philip if we have destroyed your thread.

*shudders* Sounds like a horrible experience. I hate it when that happens. Days like that is why I stopped taking network admin classes.

I'd switch to Linux myself if it wasn't for the fact that I regularly managed to crash it while using it at network administrator school. (not kidding, it'd last for about a week, then it'd crash so badly I had to format c: and reinstall...and then there is the time I had to reinstall thirteen times before the install finally worked completely)

Windows seems to be everywhere, though. Every place I've worked at or gone to school at has it installed. While it works fine for me, XP in particular is a resource hog on my home system, and I would have liked to have the choice. But oh, well, I'm stuck with Windows for now. Maybe sometime I'll get up the guts to try Linux again. Just need to learn a bit more about it, I think.

No that's ok Now we're at it Ill jump in as well

Windows is OK if you just want a desktop. If you want more you'll start see the differences. Like lennon said, the command line and configurability are great. There are so many choice and you can configure anything you want. Also it gives useful error messages and doesn't try to prevent you from things you might not want. Security is just as good as you want it to be in either linux or windows and in both you have to do something for it but the linux model is better.

Most easy linux distro's use KDE as desktop that's really bloated. If you try again you should have a look at www.linuxquestions.org forums and if you start with a dual boot you can always switch back and learn at your own pace

Thank you, Phillip. I'll definitely give it a try when and if I get a better computer than this one. I joke that Linux doesn't like me, but I probably did something I shouldn't have.
