I wonder if the asteroid belt used to be a single planet/moon?
The name Vulcan was around long before Star Trek, it's the name of a god in either Roman or Greek mythology, I always get the 2 confused.[/QUOTE]Roman. He was the god of fire and metalwork, his workshop was in a Vulcano.
Easiest way to tell most roman gods from their greek counterparts is to compare the names to modern words. Romans will generally have more similarities; such as Vulcan/Vulcano, Faunus/Faun, and the planets are also named after roman gods... Mercury was Jupiter`s messanger, Venus was the goddess of love, Jupiter was king of the gods (basically the roman form of Zeus), Saturn was his father, Uranos was the sky, Neptune the god of the sea, and Pluto king of the underworld.

To put this distance in perspective, consider a miniaturized version of the solar system in which Earth is one inch from the sun. On this scale, Pluto, the ninth planet would be a bit more than a yard from the sun. The new planet, by contrast, would be a half-mile distant.
WOW!!! half a mile distant... whistle...
