The compass is in the bottom left corner of your screen, where your party shows up in formation. Notice that as you change direction, the "node" in the circle rotates, I believe that's supposed to be north.
The map is brought up by pressing the TAB key. |

be aware that you can collapse lots of your screen area, too.
Lower Left: 3 arrows to open & close: Top Arrow-Compass Box Middle Arrow-Dialog Box Transparency(which itself has 3 small icons for what kind of text you want displayed) Bottom Arrow-Group Formation Box Upper Left: 3 boxes for hiding your portraits in different manners. the whole game is completely adjustable. there are something like 15 pages in options where you can make all the settings as personalized as you like.  one important thing to remember. nearly everything has left and right click abilities. if you are in doubt about anything, r/click or l/click on it. info boxes will be displayed telling you whatever you want to know. also, read the very first topic in the forum. it's the sticky topic "Best Tips for Wizardry". there's a wealth of information there from all us players that will help you thru out the game.
