I went through the game a few times, and the most fun party that I ever played was:

fighter4/morninglord of Lathanderx

rogue1/wizardx

human and drow, respectively. both have ridicululusly powergamed stats.

The fighter/cleric is a powerful tank and can access insane spells as a morninglord later in the game. He wields a greataxe.

The drow, with 20 intelligence and 20 dexterity, needs only the one starting lvl of rogue to get enough to unlock everything (I carry around a potion of master theivery just in case)

Both, obviously, have spirit of flame.

Also, I created a bard in the goblin fortress and NEVER leveled him up! this gives insane experience to the big boys.

Well, if anyone wants to try it, its a fun challenge.

There really isn't a "perfect" party.

Bozos of Bones is correct about this. "Perfect" is very relative to your playing style. Some people prefer a magic-heavy combat style. Some prefer a more melee style. Some like a stealthy style, while others prefer a more hard-charging bull in the china shop approach.

You need to custom fit a party to your fighting style. My style tends to be a bit more physical over magic. More specifically, I use magic to support my tanks particularly early on. Later on, I tend to flip my combat style, using my tanks to cover my spellcasters. However, I always like using a good amount of stealth.

My favorite party was as follows:

Paladin
Barb X/Fighter 4
Rogue X/Fighter 4 "Swashbuckler"
Ranger X (optimized for archery)
Cleric (Painbearer)
Sorceror X

This was a very, very well balanced party and about as near to "perfection" (for me) as possible.

2 pure tanks
2 stealthy light fighters
2 spellcasters

I'm having a blast with my solo Monk right now:

Vassago
Male Deep Gnome Lawfully Good Monk of the Old Order
STR 16 DEX 20 CON 18 INT 3 WIS 16 CHA 1
Weapons: Axe (Slashing), Fists(Bludgeoning), Crossbow (Missle-Piercing)

Currently level 5, fighting his way to save the bridge.

Another favorite character of mine is Male Drow Chaotic Evil Rogue 2/Ranger 1/Fighter 2/Wizard X. I had an evil Cleric who made Viera hand over a certain weapon early on. This made my Wizard more of a melee character than I had originally intended.
