I check the news at Gamespot everyday, but when I followed the shortcut today Avast AVG went haywire with an alarm and said that I had a virus on that page. Anybody know whats going on?

This is the type of virus being detected- VBS:Malware [Script]

Be warned if you goto Gamespot!!!!

Errrr.. LOL what time was it you went there Chewbacca? Just now or a few hours ago? At work today I was searching for a game to buy and went to a bunch of sites, and I know Gamespot was on the search list. But a few of them Firefox would not open at all which I found strange, just can't remember which ones they were. Am hoping it was Gamespot that would not come up! Either way the firewall didn't say anything so hopefully all is well. But to be on the safe side I think I'll do a scan tomorrow!

This occured about 30 minutes ago.

I just finished a full scan and my machine is clean. I suspect Avast's real-time scanner saved my ass from infection, assuming the threat is real.

If you look at that message, it tells you that it encountered VBS:Malware. IOW, a visual basic script (VBS) that was highly suspect and likely a source of malware.

Seems to me that when I last went onto gamespot, it launched popup hell and other stuff that really irritated and annoyed me. I haven't gone back, and don't plan to...

Yeah it is usually not the complete fault of the website rather the advertising company that they use for their banner ad's.

Send a message to their webmaster informing them of this so they can get their ad's changed.

Just an update. An admin at Gamespots tech forums explained it is just a case of over-sensitive virus scanning of some sort of script and assured that a check revealed that there is no real malware to be found.

I go there many times a day, havn't noticed anything but got kinda worried after reading this thread...

By the way I use Firefox and get no popup hell...
I'd do a adaware spybot scan, some spyware/adware is triggered when certain sites are visited, specially popular ones, and can have nothing to do with the site.
