what you need are the waters of forgetfulness, iirc. you buy them over at the shop in the lower right of that map. i can't recall the shop owner's name, but its where you walk up the stairs to get inside. she has all those weird things (like the modron cube toy, gorgon salve, etc.)

oh wait.. in case you want to do it yourself...i left out the part about how you can make the waters. when you have the mug (either from the shop or that drunk mage), you go to the art gallery and there's a piece called "dark birds of acanthus". you need to capture one of the birds in your mug. then you can give it to merriman.

sorry for being vague... it's been awhile since my last playthru.

I didn't know you could buy water of forgetfulness from the blue demon woman in the curiosity shop. I always went for the gallery.

Heh.. I always had Annah pickpocket Merriman for the keys. Saves a ton of time and money.

You get more experience for helping the drunk mage, getting the mug free from him, and then using it to get the water.

How do you help the mage, anyway? I've always bought the mug from the creepy lady.
