Well...at least that's good to hear.

The space shuttle carries large quantities of Hydrozine for thrusters manuevers and other compunds, not to mention some other materials that are toxic to humans. Yes, the containers can withstand the fall. They are designed to be tough so that a micrometeorite impact would have minimal damage. This will ground the shuttle fleet until they finish the investigation. Several months at least.

At least, though they died, they died living out a dream. They understood the dangers. God Bless them.

Question Mark

It is highly unlikely that any sort of fuel remains intact on any debris that has fallen to the ground. 200,000 ft (61,000 m), 12,500 mph (20,115 kph), and an explosion would have vaporized any fuel. Personally, I don't believe that any debris is toxic in any way (unless it is radioactive ); however, no one should pick up debris because that would interfere with any investigation.

I do have a couple of questions, though: 1) Is it possible to have a vapor trail at 200,000 ft? 2) Why is NASA insisting that fuel may remain on debris that has fallen?

I saw the Challenger explode back in 1986. How sadly unfortunate that this has happened again. I certainly hope the investigation proceeds quickly and that the entire program begins normal operations soon. My condolonces to friends and families of the victims.

There have been reports of groups of people, roaming around, looking for debris. Stupid twits, I hope they have the sense to report any finds to the authoritities.

Before or after they die of toxic poisoning?

What terrible news . Together with the Sydney train crash 2 days ago that killed 8, there's been too much tragedy lately

I've been watching breaking news for awhile now. The shuttle exploded around 200,007 feet in the air, and its been scattered all over the states. Bush has already made his speech, what a tradgedy.
