Thermal insulation or ice from the fuel boosters. NASA was apparently aware of the damage and if I heard this part right, the crew did an in flight inspection of the damage and judged it to be minimal.

This must be a warning sent by murphys law

just on the news a while ago i heard nasa was looking for teachers to go on shuttle missions again, the teachers were excited just like the last time they were given this chance and a shuttle blew up.

Oh man, they can't ground the shuttle fleet TOO long, we have people on the Int' space station! (didn't think of THAT!)

No reported ground casualties, although NASA is urging people to stay away from the debris as some of it may be toxic.
