How do you defend yourself against a mugger who runs off, and you can't find them anywhere?

when an accidental click in a dialogue thread gave away my loot to muggers I forced attacked them Immediatly, turning them hostile.(and stopping them from disappearing offscreen) Once dead my loot was found on one of the bodies.If they already got away you may hafta reload.
