Hi

I would like to know what controls the behaviour (ie. hostillity) of an NPC/enemy, when you cast an offensive spell.

Example:

There is a non hostile NPC on the map. I cast stinking cloud. Does the NPC go hostile when:

a) Immediately independent of where I cast the spell.
b) The NPC wanders accidentally into my stinking cloud and have to save.
c) If I cast the stinking cloud directly on the NPC (or close enough to 'hit' the NPC with the area effect.
d) Never. The spell does not harm the NPC.

Is it the same behaviour for skull trap and other area and time effective spells?

something like stinking cloud might be save dependent. I'm not sure though but the npc definetly has to be in the area of effect. things like skull trap are dangerous where there are populations cause if you accidently kill someone everybody goes hostile and you lose rep

soem spells will make the npc attack you and some wont, also if he wanders in by accident then again sometimes he may go red others he may go yellow and run off if a weaker npc others he may just stay blue, stand there and take the damage (like i seen with cloud kill before) because it wasnt specifically targeted at him he did nothing, just stood there and slowly died was some guy in the undercellar when i was fighting the assassins there.

Commoners and other non-hostile creatures have a script that makes them hostile if they are attacked by the player or see another commoner who is hostile to player.
"Attacked" means "take damage"

To be more specific: How would Drizzt react? Wouldn't he go hostile if he by 'accident' walked into an area covered with webs and stinking cloud made by one of my characters?

If not, I guess that you could simply cast web and stinking cloud in front of Drizzt. Wait for him to wander into the area and see if he misses some of his saves. If he doesn't get affected by the spells then retry in a new area. If he gets stuck or fall unconsious, then turn him into a pincushion and 'collect' whatever he drops

It's a nice theory. Unfortunately he doesn't stay down forever, and once he gets up he's worse company than a nest of really angry grumpy vipers.
Aside from having to waste a lot of spells just waiting for him to fail that one save, it's unlikely you can do enough damage to kill him in one or two rounds.
On the other hand, it will get you a small headstart for 'free', which may just be that little extra you need to beat Mr. Drow.
