Anyone here read Terry Brooks - Shannara? Tell me what you thought of them.

Personally, l liked reading them, though I felt it was not a whole as lord of the rings was. It was too, how do I put this, sloppy, although not so much from The Elfstones onward

The Shannara series - now there's some memories for me.

My college roommate introduced me to them. I LOVED the original trilogy (still have them AAMOF). I especially liked the Wishsong - lots of powerful characters in that one.

Did the Shannara series have an impact on us? Well, my roommate's first PnP character was a druid (because he thought it would be the similar to the druid in the first set).

His most powerful character was a half-elf named Dayus.

Yeah, we kinda liked those books.

Have you ever read Joel Rosenberg? He did a trilogy based on a group of college AD&D gamers who are actually transported into their game world and become their characters -- that was an interesting series too.

I can't remember the series name off the top of my head, but just check out Joel Rosenberg on amazon.com and you'll find them.

Take care, Zuvio. It's fun talking to somebody with the same tastes in books.

Can't say I liked them - although I've forgotten why - just as I've forgotten most of the stories. What heve the Shannara series reached - 10 books?

and on Rosenberg - not a trilogy, but 7-8 books in a series (not one of my favourites either)

Actually, I own the first trilogy out of the series but am yet to read them. I was in a book club where you had to buy at least one book a month, so I've stocked up for a while!

I'll get around to them one day while I'm waiting for The Wheel of Time 10.

You'll find a real mix of opinions concerning this series. They range from pure love all the way to pure hate and many inbetween. I liked the first series a lot and the second book of the second series was very interesting, but Brooks ran out of steam and I never bothered with anything else in this series or anything else he wrote.

I don't love or hate the Shannara series - I do enjoy them when I'm in the mood for that type of book. I've read the first 5 in the series, and have five of the books - I think there is 11 so far.

As for Joel Rosenberg, the series is called "The Guardians of the Flame" series. I've got the first 8 and am going out after work to get the ninth. The tenth is in hard copy now I think. I think the first ones in the series are the best - so far. I'll see what I think of number 9. Rosenberg's got another simalar series too, based on Norse mythology - "Keepers of the Hidden Ways". Only three so far in that one - don't know if he's going to write more.

I have enjoyed reading the series for 25 years now... I have read and reread the books several times...

I was quite surprised when Brooks came out with a new installment of the series, and am eagerly waiting for the paperback release of the next one...

The writing does improve greatly over the life of the series, and the enjoyment factor does, as you follow the various characters and there incarnations thru out the eras...

The books makes a person rethink the role of Druids in ancient legends.. The Druids in this series are dark, very secretive, loners, and mystical... What am I saying, that is how Druids are in all books...

8 books
Legendary Shannara series 1-2-3-4
Heritage of Shannara 5-6-7-8

I do really love the continues nature of the series.

[edit] correction, indeed 10 I think. Terry started a new series called The Voyage of Jerle Shannara. Seems interesting to me. As soon as I get around Ill go read them too [/edit]

I read the first two series and the Voyage of Jerle Shannara: Ilse Witch. The second book has been floating around my library, but I haven't had a great desire to pick it up. I liked the series, but I wouldn't say they're 'great' fantasy.
