I think this is a ToB question, but heres the solution anyway:

In BG1 you can aquire the GOLDEN PANTLOONS (friendly arm inn) In BG2 you can get the SILVER PANATLOONS (buired man quest) and in ToB you can get the BRONZE PANTALETS. combine these in a certain location to get the best armour in the game by far.

Oh, and the broken sheild etc.. really IS just a broken sheild.

The three pants together (one in the Friendly Arm Inn in BG1, one in the kidnapping quest in BG2 and one somewhere in ToB) allow you access to a special magic weapon.
All 'broken' objects are useless. You can safely dump them.
