When I first played the game back in november I did not have any patch for the game and played it straight thru with no probs

Lucky you. Non installation of the patch doesn't necessarily mean you will run into problems but its installation will repair a few you never knew you had and many that you possibly never even encountered. There are some obvious fixes that the patch repairs like receiving millions of GP for some items.
