I've read on this forum that it is possible to use the pure ore to upgrade the Mace of Disruption, and still complete the temple quest. If so are the rewards equal????

You get a little less exp if you give Sarles the fake ore, but that is about it. You still get the same item from the Temple of Helm (Helm of Glory, I believe). However, if you have the real Illithium in your inventory when you talk to Sarles, he will take the real ore regardless of what you say to him. Dump the real ore on the ground before talking to him.

Also, depending(i think) on your charisma, he might see through the trick of the fake ore. You could always steal it back.
