I think, it's a part of a more general - and very desirable - concept. We can call it "do something that makes the things less serious". In MM games, we have Acromage. Another implementation of this idea can be found in Realms of Arkania. For example, you can buy cheeseburgers. They are cheap and they restore your fatigue effectively or - they make you sick Or, you can meet an "old woman", which tries to sell you an amulet. The amulet is usually a useless trinklet but, sometimes, it is a powerful amulet. You can meet a girl, which gives you a silver coin. And so on.
In the other words, allow the player to do something different from killing monsters, getting quests and reporting their completion or failure. He can play cards in inns, search cheeseburgers or old womans with amulets or do something else. The concept makes the game much more attractive than the "plain" games without the "not so serious" events.

I agree, Radek - having a wider variety of activities beyond the monster killing would add greatly to the fun. We had several quests in W&W that inandofthemselves did not demand that you kill anything but generally to complete them you did. The problem with those quests was they weren't necessarily fun and weren't something you could do again within the same game.
So maybe a Toad Village casino and carnival would be neat. Collasium seahorse races. Pin the helmet on the Ghost. Raptor Archery Tournament. Mining for fun and profit. Poker in Serpent Temple (groan) Boogre Folk Dancing. Easter Egg Hunts with Oakenmir. Tag with the Leprechaun - no forget that one! lol!! Hop Scotch in DragonSpire. There were a lot of potential mini games already in place! |

The "have-some-fun-that-doesn't-really-have-anything-to-do-with-the-game" element was always a hallmark of DW Bradley games. eg - the funhouse in wizardry (5 or 6??). I even put the Boogre caves in this categorie.
I think Boogre Bowling would be fun too... And I'd love to see a CRPG that lets you actually build your own base - a castle, house, whatever. This (in the ancient dice-and-lead-figurine days) used to be one of my favourite AD&D exploits: saving up for, designing, and finally building a home of my very own! I'd love to see this realized in a non-Sims-like RPG like W&W.
