There are so many men families, wives, parents and children all hurting terribly from the loss of their loved ones.
This is not meant to diminish in any way the losses of other lives but to spot light those families whose loved loves gave the ultimate sacrifice for their community.
To send condolences, notes, encouragement or even a crayola picture...here are two addresses below. If you have specific groups of people in mind, i.e. wives, children, etc. please just indicate on the outside of your envelope if it should go to a wife, parent, child, ect.

They will be sure and get them to the right hands when they have time and will be a great help to counselors and social workers.

Thanks, hon, these will come in handy.

BTW guys, do be careful who you donate money to. If you haven't heard, scumbag scam artists have already got things up and running on the web and via e-mail to sucker you in to making them rich in the guise of helping the survivors of the WTC tragedy. Just keep your eyes open and investigate something before you give. Some are even saying they are collecting for the Red Cross and such, so be careful.

Thank you for that added "heads-up" DragonMage.

Definitely go through legitimate addresses such as police stations, etc.

Locally, make donations of money directly to the offices rather than to people on the street, unless they are obviously working for the organization (ID should prove that)

The above addresses are meant specifically for cards and letters I think...moral support for those families who lost the lives of their loved ones in the rescue efforts who really need uplifting right now.
