Question Mark

Members of the forum.

While boredom has set in, I was rummaging through my WinXP Pro disk and searched the disk. Looking for hidden treasures that have been present since Win95 days, I crossed paths with a uber program. Application capatability tools. Anywhos, I's a tinker'r, and am waiting to tinker with it. It has W&W listed, and quite a few files present within a 4 or 5 tier drop down menu.

Question to the group.
Has anybody tried this yet?
If ya did, did it work?
If not, please explain.

Now Willow, I know you spent many a day working the forum within the tech thread for WinXP. But remember, my specialty is hardware, kein software. I have reformatted my HDDs probably more times than you folks play W&W, just because I had a bad registry file, or noticed a slowdown in performance. If it weren't for those chessy little wizards that do that self install magic, I probably would have no software on board at all.

Am most interested in finding out if this is a true fixer or not.

Felix

Hmm I am not running XP, I will come the end of the summer most probably. What you are looking at is the only way to run software produced for Win 9x/ME alone on a Windows NT based system (Win NT/2000/XP). All non-Windows shortcuts have the Compatibility tab (I guess you right-clicked your short cut and chose properties). What this does, running a program in compatibility mode, is that Windows creates an environment in which the program can function properly. If you choose to run the game in Windows 95 layer, W&W will believe that it is Windows 95 that is your installed OS not Windows XP. If you want more incompatibilities fixed I suggest you download the latest ACT, or Application Compatibility Tools (Windows XP only) from Microsoft. With this tool you will get several options to configure any non-XP-compatible program and hopefully run it.

AFAIK Microsoft does not list W&W as a Xp compatible program. To see a complete list of compatible programs for Win XP, meaning that the program will install and run without any problems, look here

Wow Willow slow down.
I don't even have W&W installed. I was just running amuck on my WinXP CD. I just happened to run across the compatability tool, and found W&W on it. Whence I peered inside, it listed 5 different .exe for the game. From setup, splash, deep6, etc. I have not played since WinXP, uhm after Kosovo last Fall. I just remember reading all of those XP issues, and was wondering if this was a quantum find or not.
Me tinks me will tinker with it, and see if it will run.

Hmm you need to tell me more! Where did you find what? And what was the exact filename of the thing you found? This weekend I'll probably be able to browse the WinXP Pro CD. Is that the one you have too? All information is appreciated.

It's nothing of great use. Just like you said in your first reply to the post, it's just a compatability program. It's located on my WinXP "PRO" CD within the tools folder.
It allowed me to refresh myself, create a character, but I could not use all of the town's shops, nor leave from the front gate. I used the virtual dud thing from the tech thread, but that made it worse. So I dumped it all, reworked my registry and, that was about all of my time.
